Course Description

This course will survey basic concepts in cell physiology. In addition, a survey of basic anatomical terminology will precede a study of the histology, gross anatomy and function of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and endocrine systems. Use will be made of the case-study method to achieve the desired understanding and integration of physiologic principles. The laboratory portion of the course will include use of human cadavers to study the anatomy of the systems indicated above. AAS: Life science (laboratory science) elective.

Prerequisites

BIOL 1564 with a grade of C or better, or appropriate high school introductory anatomy and physiology course

General Education Outcomes

General Education Outcomes are the knowledge, skills, abilities, attitudes, and behaviors that students are expected to develop as a result of their overall experiences with any aspect of the college, including courses, programs, and student services, both inside and outside of the classroom. The General Education Outcomes specifically learned in this course are:

  1. Responsibility

Course Policies

Make-up policy:

Labs:

Lab reports will be due at the beginning of your next lab session. Late lab reports must be turned in within one calendar week of the assigned due date and late lab reports will have points deducted depending on the tardiness of the report. Late lab reports will not be accepted after that point. You MAY NOT turn in a lab assignment for a lab you did not attend and therefore will not get points for that lab report. However, your two (2) lowest lab report grades of the semester will be dropped. If you know in advance that you are going to miss a lab, contact me and you may be able to go to another lab section that week, although that is not guaranteed. There is no make-up lab final.

Unit Quizzes

If you arrive late for an exam, the exam time will NOT be extended to accommodate you. This is also true for lab quizzes. If you miss a quiz, you will have five school days to take the make-up quiz. Make-up lecture quizzes are to be scheduled with the professor or taken at the testing center (for testing center information go to KCC’s website and click on “testing services” under “Current Students”). Make-up quizzes may include short answer and fill-in-the-blank questions. If you know ahead of time that you will be missing an exam day then you may take the regular exam early. All finals must be taken at the assigned time.

Pencil: a #2 pencil must be used on all lecture quizzes/exams. None will be provided for you.

Expectations for Classroom and Online Behavior

Academic Dishonesty: You are responsible for understanding what is listed in the student code of conduct as examples of academic dishonesty, such as cheating, plagiarism and facilitating academic dishonesty (http://www.kcc.edu/students/academics/Pages/codeofconduct.aspx).

Expectation for Artificial Intelligence (AI) involvement: Any assignments turned in are expected to be a result of your own work and research. Any sources used for research are to be properly cited, including any AI software. For any assignment, activity, lab report, or exam in which you violate the student code of conduct you will receive zero points on the assignment after the first violation. You will also receive a written warning. The second violation will result in failure of the class and potentially further disciplinary action through the school administration.

Cell phones: Please silence all electronic devices prior to the start of lab/class to prevent class disruption. Please refrain from texting or using your phone or computer for non-class related reasons. The use of ear buds is prohibited during lecture and lab.

Audio/video recordings: Professor Scott provides recorded lectures through Canvas. Student may also make recordings of live lectures and labs only after receiving permission from the instructor. These recordings are only for personal use while enrolled in this class. The student may not share and/or distribute these recordings without the express written consent of the instructor.

Laboratory Safety Attendance at the first laboratory meeting is required. A student may not participate in lab if he/she has missed the first lab meeting, which includes the mandatory lab safety training. If a student misses the first lab meeting, he/she must notify the instructor to make arrangements to make up the safety training before the second lab meeting.

Students are expected to always comply with the KCC Science Laboratory Safety Rules. These rules will be discussed during the first lab meeting and each student will sign an acknowledgement of receipt and understanding. Students who do not comply with the safety rules will be asked to leave the lab and will receive no credit for that day’s work.
