Course Description

This is a survey course intended for health career students. The structure and function of human tissue, organs, and systems will be studied. Strong emphasis is placed on developing basic skills in medical terminology. AAS: Life science (Laboratory science) elective.

Course Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Be able to describe or demonstrate an understanding of the basic chemical processes occurring in the human body.
  2. Utilize a basic working knowledge of medical terminology.
  3. Be able to name and identify the basic organs and related structures of the eleven human organ systems on models, cats, cadavers, pictures, or drawings.
  4. Be able to effectively use directional, sectional, and planar terms to locate or identify structures or organs in the human body.
  5. Be able to list and explain the major functions of each organ or organ system in the human body.
  6. Be able to explain and demonstrate knowledge of the interrelationships of structures, organs, and organ systems to homeostasis.

Course Policies

Make-up policy: During the semester, Canvas will drop your two lowest terminology quizzes out of the 12 taken and the two lowest lab reports out of the 15 assigned. Therefore, there are no make-ups for term quizzes. Terminology quizzes must be taken during the assigned dates. Labs are due on the assigned date/ time. Labs may be submitted early either in person or attached to a KCC email. Finals and lecture quizzes/ exams taken after the assigned date and time, for any reason, will consist of short answer and essay questions. Make-up lecture quizzes must be taken within two weeks of the assigned test date/ time during my office hours. Make-up lab final/practical will have 7.5 points deducted from the score. All finals must be taken by the end of the semester. If you are aware of a scheduling conflict, you may arrange to take an exam early during my office hours.

  • Attendance: Attending class and being an active participant are crucial to your success in this course.
  • Please turn off all electronic devices (cell phones, headphones, etc.) prior to the start of class/ lab to prevent class disruption.
  • Pencil (#2) must be used on all exams. None will be provided.
  • Safety goggles must be worn while handling specimens or chemicals.
  • Audio recordings: Students may make audio recordings of lecture and/ or lab for their own personal use while enrolled in this class. However, the student may not share and/ or distribute these recordings without the expressed written consent of the instructor.
  • Students may review old exams during any office hours until the last lecture of the semester. Students may not copy or write anything down while reviewing the exams
