SHOP SAFETY RULES

1. You will always wear safety glasses in the shop.

2. You will always use jack stands to support a vehicle – never a floor jack.

3. You will always use the exhaust extractors when running an engine in the shop – the only exception will be moving a vehicle in or out the door.

4. You will always raise a car on the lift 3 inches and rock it before lifting the vehicle to service height. Raise the back axle first.

5. You will get the instructor’s consent before using shop equipment.

6. You will always inform the instructor of any pieces left over after completing a job.

7. You will always inform the instructor before using any cutting or abrasive tools(example torch grinder bench grinder etc).

8. You will always have two (2) fire extinguishers present, armed, and manned, any time an open flame (ex. A welding torch) is being used.

9. You will always clean, arrange, and return tools to the tool room when you are done.

10. You will always return and arrange shop manuals when you are done.

11. You will always get the instructor’s permission before bringing a car in the shop.

12. When in doubt about any safety situation or job procedure, you will ask the instructor before proceeding.

13. Place key on the top of dash on driver side when finished with a vehicle

14. Always check battery state of charge after service of a vehicle. If a battery is left dead for the next group you will loose points on your hands on lab.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

1. Safety and Desirable Work Habits: To develop in each student the habit of an orderly, safe and efficient performance in the use of the tools and equipment used in the automotive trade.

2. Knowledge, Interest, and Appreciation: To acquire a knowledge of physical, chemical, and mathematical laws, as well as an insight into an appreciation of the significance of automotive brakes and alignment systems.

3. Cooperation and Initiative: To develop in each student the ability to work cooperatively with others while at the same time acquires a feeling of pride, self-reliance, and initiative in doing tasks well.

4. Planning and Skills: To develop in each student the ability to plan and think for himself, as well as to be able to execute his plans and designs.

CLASS ACHIEVEMENT DEPENDS UPON:

1. Regular attendance is essential to learning the material in this class and getting a good grade. If you are not here, you cannot pass.

2. If you are tardy, your grade will go down.

3. Class starts promptly on time

4. There is no such thing as an excused absence. Leaving a message with the secretary that you will not be in class does not constitute an excused absence. I will consider extraordinary circumstances such as serious illness and we will try to make satisfactory arrangements.

5. Missed quizzes will be made up before the next class meeting.

6. Bring a pencil, notebook, text, notes, and handouts to every class.

7. Eat a meal before beginning a class session. You cannot concentrate on your work when you are hungry.

8. It is expected that you can add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

9. If you work on your own car in the lab, you are responsible for the purchase of any parts. KCC has a limited amount of emergency repair items such as tire patches, mechanic’s wire, air and water. No gasoline is available.

10. There is no labor charge on work done in the lab.

11. There is no guarantee or warranty of any kind on any work done in the KCC Auto Lab by any person.

12. You are responsible for leaving the lab in spotless condition. Rags, brooms, soap, water, hoses, and squeegees are available. You mess it, you clean it. I do not care that your work area was dirty when you began to use it. Your work area must be clean when you are finished.

13. Report any accidents immediately. The standing procedure is to call the Kankakee Fire Department Rescue Squad if in my opinion you are seriously injured. You are responsible for the fee the Department charges for transporting you to the hospital. You are free to decline treatment and/or transportation, in which case they will have you sign a liability release form.

14. Report any broken tools immediately.

15. No smoking in the classroom or lab. Smoking is prohibited in all KCC buildings. Remember, you are working around gasoline fueled vehicles.

16. Carbon monoxide is produced anytime you run an internal combustion engine. CO will kill you. Always put a hose on the tail pipe of any vehicle you intend to operate, even if it is only for a few minutes, and connect it to the operating exhaust extractor.

17. If you are working around the fan (water pump, alternator, radiator, hoses, etc.), disconnect the battery. Mechanics with no hands have a hard time finding a job.

18. Jacks are for lifting only. Use jack stands anytime you have to get under a car.

19. KCC auto mechanics classes are designed to teach entry level skills. It takes years of experience and continual study to become a master Technician

20. Students should take extra time other than what homework requires to look into upcoming changes in technology and service.
