Through projects involving planning and the manipulation of various media, students will gain experience in the use of design principles and conceptual development of ideas in a two-dimensional format. The material covered in this course is the basis for all art, from drawing to commercial design. AAS: Humanities/fine arts elective.

Methods of Evaluation

Grading Scale

A (90-100)
B (80-89)
C (70-79)
D (60-69)
F (Below 60)

Evaluation

Grades are based on the following factors:

  1. Meeting requirements and deadlines
  2. Craftmenship
  3. Time invested, exploration, and creativity (push your work to the limit)
  4. Following instructions
  5. Quizzes/written assignments
  6. Attendance

Attendance
Students must sign the sign-in sheet upon entering the classroom to be marked present. You are permitted two absences for any reason without any effect on your grade. Each additional absence beyond the allotted two will result in a 1/2-letter grade deduction from your final grade. Upon the fourth absence, you will be asked to drop the course.
(If you have extenuating circumstances in your life, please talk to me and keep me informed. Often, we can work through it, but it requires communication on your part.)

Absences
It is your responsibility to stay informed about what you missed. Communicate with classmates, check CANVAS, and complete any missed assignments by their deadlines. If an assignment is due on a day you are absent, make arrangements with the instructor in advance for submission.

Tardiness
Arriving more than 5 minutes late will be recorded as tardiness. Arriving 15 minutes or more late will be counted as an absence. Early departures are treated the same way. Three tardies or early departures equal one absence.

Out-of-Class Work
Because this is a studio course, you are expected to spend at least 4-6 hours per week outside of class working on assignments. If you cannot meet this minimum, you may find it difficult to fulfill the course requirements.

Course Policies

Assignments
All assignments will be posted in the Modules tab of CANVAS. Assignments are due on their assigned date at the beginning of class.

Late Assignments
Work not turned in by the beginning of class on the due date is considered late. Late assignments will receive an automatic 5% reduction of the assignment’s grade for each day it is late. After one week, you will receive a 0. If you have a pressing situation that prevents you from finishing on time (such as illness, family emergency, etc.), please keep me informed. I will try to work with you.

Grading
A high-quality photo of the assignment must be submitted on CANVAS by the deadline. Both the physical artwork (brought to class) and the photo (uploaded to Canvas) must be submitted to receive a grade. I grade from the physical work and then mark up the digital image to provide feedback.

Artwork
Please do not throw out any work until the end of the semester, after grades have been submitted. Keep track of your work and store it neatly. You may need to keep certain pieces for your portfolio if you are planning to transfer to another school. In that case, you should also keep a digital record of your best work. Any work left behind at the end of the semester will be tossed.

Academic Integrity
Written work or artwork may not be plagiarized in any way. Any plagiarism or use of AI-written material will result in an automatic zero for the assignment.

Classroom Expectations

  • Email: Check your university email and the class CANVAS page frequently. I will send important information, reminders, schedule changes, etc., via email. Announcements, course information, and additional class resources will be available on CANVAS.
  • Attendance: Regular attendance and participation, both in class and during outside work time, are critical. Arrive on time for each class and be prepared to work. You must bring the required tools to every class. Much of the course material is presented through demonstrations, presentations, critiques, and class discussions—these cannot easily be repeated.
  • Music: During classwork time, you may wear one earbud or headphone. With the other ear open, you’ll be able to overhear conversations that may be helpful to your work.
  • Phones: Be professional and stay focused. Silence your phone and put it away unless you are actively using it for course-related purposes.
  • Ask for Help: Be proactive about your learning. Stay in touch and let me know about any issues you’re having. I’m here to help!
Expectations for Classroom and Online Behavior

Please treat others with respect. Making connections in life is important, so don’t hesitate to talk to each other and help as needed. We grow by listening to constructive advice from others! Be mindful that there are others in the class learning along with you, so keep conversations at an appropriate noise level.

My only request is that if I’m talking, please stop and listen.
