Course Description

This course is the culmination of the Medical Laboratory Technology program. It provides the student the means to do a comprehensive review in preparation to take the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification exam or other certifying agency exam. The course also helps prepare students to be workforce ready by giving them the opportunity to perform and teach others important skills used by medical personnel. Lastly, students will compile a working resume and interview skills that can be used when applying for positions in the medical laboratory.

Prerequisites

MEDT 2214 and MEDT 2044 - Must be completed prior to taking this course.

Explanation of Course Alignment

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to: 

1. Research a procedure utilized in the clinical laboratory and teach other lab professionals that specific lab skill. Define a given procedure/skill that would be important for clinical laboratory personnel to know. Construct a set of learning objectives that will explain what the observer of the skill will learn. List and explain the proper steps of the procedure/skill to be demonstrated. Demonstrate the said procedure/skill by video recording the action. 

2. Take the ASCP certification exam by reviewing program courses and taking a comprehensive MLT Exit exam. Log into Media Lab and complete required number of test questions per department throughout the semester. 

Urinalysis - 25 questions 

Immunology/Serology - 25 questions 

Blood Bank - 75 questions 

Chemistry - 75 questions 

Microbiology - 100 questions 

Hematology - 100 questions 

Demonstrate proficiency as a workforce prepared laboratory professional by scoring a 75% or better on MediaLab questions

Review all MEDT courses and apply knowledge of: 

Theory and principles related to: Anatomy (Body fluids) Genetics (Blood Bank) Growth characteristics/diagnostic and infective forms (Microbiology) Immunology (Blood Bank and Immunology) Physiology (Body Fluids, Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology)

  5. Compile a professional resume and cover letter.

A minimum of 75% competence is required to maintain eligibility in the Medical Laboratory Technician Program.

Course Policies

1. The student is required to read the assigned text, review web links, and complete MediaLab questions on time. On time is by Sunday of each week in the department rotation. A 5% reduction in grade will apply every day the assignment is late up to one week late. Upon which the grade will be a zero.

2. Students are expected to login to the course daily (Mon. thru Thurs.) to get important information or changes regarding the course. 

3. Students will take the MLT Exit exam and strive for a minimum score of 75%. If the student fails to receive a 75% on the initial exam another exam will be available in which the student will be required to receive a 75%. All mock exams will be proctored on campus or utilizing LockDown browser and Respondus Monitor. If a student fails to pass the second exam with a score of 75% or better, a remediation plan will be required to complete the class. The remediation would entail taking all the MEDT course final exams and receiving a 70% or better overall. If the course exam average is not above a 70%, the exams will be weighted into the final grade as 5%

4.The first mock exam is scheduled for Monday May 11, 2026. The second mock exam must be taken no later than Wednesday May 13, 2026 Arrangements regarding time and place will be announced.
