The student will be able to perform basic welding skills using the Oxyacetylene, and shielded metal arc welding processes. The student will also be able to explain the principles of oxyacetylene, shielded metal arc welding, oxyacetylene cutting welding, and brazing. Basic tools must be supplied by the student.

Course Information
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Interpret welding symbols and explain their use
- Show proper shop safety in the operation of oxy fuel, shield metal arc welding equipment, along with plasma cutting, and carbon arc gouging.
- Perform given welds based on information provided Surfacing welds, Butt joints Lap joints, T-joints, Corner joints. In the flat, horizontal position using the Oxy Fuel process. And the same positions previously mentioned including vertical position using the SMAW process.
- Understand the American Welding Society electrode numeration standard and select electrodes based on a given weldment geometry position.

Supplies:
Students must wear leather work boots,( NO TENNIS SHOES), safety glasses ( clear, not reflective), jeans (no fraying edges) to every class. Tape measure (16ft), wire brush, chipping hammer, welding hood with #5,& #10 lenses, extra clear lens for welding hood, leather welding/ work gloves, welding jacket (green or blue), welding cap / beany, tip cleaner, striker, large pliers, silver & black sharpie markers, and a positive attitude.
Note: Supplies can be purchased at Pratt except foot wear.
All supplies are obtained at Pratts’ except for high top boots.

- Welding hood with # 5, & #10 or #11 lens
- Leather welding / work gloves

- Mild steel brush
- Mill jacket- green/ blue ( with leather sleeves if you are a Welding Major)
- Heavy Pliers
- Additional clear lens for welding hood.

Quizzes 30% 100 to 90% = A
Labs 50% 89 to 80% =B
Final Exam 20% 79 to 70% =C
69 to 60% = D
59% and below = F
A final grade of a C or better is necessary to progress to the Advanced Welding course.

Course Policies
Regular attendance at all scheduled class sessions is expected, Attendance is take at the beginning, and end of class. If a student has missed more class hours than the number of credit hours to be earned in the class, the instructor may record a grade of "F" for the course. Four or more unexcused absences will result in an automatic failure of the course. If the student knows they will not be able to attend class, that student must notify the instructor prior to the beginning of that class either by text, e mail, or phone. This does not excuse the absence, but affords the student the opportunity to make up the class. The student will have two weeks from the date of the missed class to make up that class at the mutual convenience of the instructor and student. No make ups will be accepted after two weeks, and a zero will be recorded for the missed class. Failure of the student to attend class does not constitute withdrawal. The student must make a formal written withdrawal through the Office of Admissions and Records. Each unexcused absence will lower the student’s final grade by one half letter grade. If the instructor finds that there is no chance for the student to successfully pass the course, the instructor may have the student institutionally withdrawn from the course. If the student fails to have completed the assigned homework, that student will not be allowed to participate in the lab activities, and will not receive any credit for that class session. No student will be allowed to work in the lab without proper attire, long pants, leather work boots that cover the ankle, and safety glasses. Safety glasses must be worn at ALL times in the Welding Lab. Attendance for the entire class period is mandatory.
Welding Lab Practices: Professionalism
It is expected that all students will clean up their personal workspace, any equipment used, and surrounding areas prior to leaving the lab. Clean up, and personal productivity is mandatory, and will be reflected in the professionalism grade. No practice welds will be accepted by the instructor prior to clean up. NO open toed shoes are acceptable in the wed lab at any time. It is at the instructor’s discretion to remove any student from class that does not have proper personal protection equipment, and this will be considered an unexcused absence. Any intentional disregard for students or any person in the lab or lab equipment is subject to immediate removal from the class permanently.
CELL PHONE POLICY
It is not permissible to use your cell phone for any reason at any time during classroom or lab time with the exception when using the calculator mode. Use of the cell phone calculator is not permissible during quizzes or exams. If you are expecting an urgent, or otherwise emergency phone call, you must inform the instructor as to the nature of the call, and do so before class begins. Violations are subject to immediate removal from that class period, and a zero will be entered for that class with no means for makeup of that class. Ear buds are not acceptable for hearing protection devices.
Code of Conduct
Students need to adhere to the Code of Conduct located in the college catalog. Anyone suspected, in the judgment of KCC faculty/administrators/security, to be under the influence of drugs, alcohol or other behavior-altering substances may be tested without notice according to board-approved procedures. Violation also includes failure to comply with college procedure for testing. The student will not be allowed back to class until college administrators has reviewed the incident
