Course Description

The student will be introduced to basic principles of effective speaking and listening. Emphasis is on both understanding basic communication theory and on improving oral communication skills. The student will learn to prepare, organize, and deliver effective research-based informative and persuasive speeches. AAS: Business elective. IAI: C2 900.

Prerequisites

Appropriate assessment score or ENGL 1422 with a grade of C or better - Must be taken either prior to or at the same time as this course.

Course Policies

General Course Policies:
1. Please read/watch/listen to the assigned material and contribute to online
discussion. I expect you to respond to your classmates and make comments.
Simply do your best to participate. Be kind and encouraging.
2. Turn in your speeches before or by the due dates. I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY
LATE SPEECHES. (unless there is death/illness,please send proper
documentation as proof)
You must plan IN ADVANCE to have your audience of 6 available
3. Let me know asap if you are having technical difficulties due to internet issues
and need extra time due to technical difficulties.
One of the most challenging parts of the course is the ability to properly
submit all parts of the speech under the speech assignment. Make sure you
can see your outline document, video and any other section required in the
rubric. I will NOT accept these via email, it must be submitted on
Canvas under the proper assignment. Please go to IT or student
success center to troubleshoot technical difficulties. Please check
volume, lighting and ability to submit in canvas. The video must be
consecutive, no video edits or segments will be accepted. Submit your phone
recording via Canvas Studio Icon (blue box icon with antennae).
You may upload mp4 recordings into canvas studio to make the process
easier. You may also submit multiple file attachments in the chat box, under
the paperclip.
YOU MUST READ THROUGH THE RUBRIC FOR EACH SPEECH CAREFULLY, I
MUST HAVE VIDEO AND OUTLINE TO BE ABLE TO GIVE YOU A PASSING
GRADE FOR ALL 3 REQUIRED SPEECHES.

Expectations for Classroom and Online Behavior

Plagiarism:
Plagiarism is defined in section 16.2 of the Code of Conduct: “Representing the
words or ideas of another as one’s own. Plagiarism includes claiming credit for
assignments completed by someone else.” All instances of intentional plagiarism
on any major assignment for this course will lead to the immediate failure of the
course with no opportunity for the student to withdraw. The instance of
plagiarism will be reported to the Vice President for Student Development and
Services. If the student has a second instance of plagiarism reported to the Vice
President for Student Development and Services, the student may be suspended
from the institution.
Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to:
1. giving someone else’s speech.
2. reading your speech from published material without citing the source in your
presentation. Please note, material found on the Internet is considered
published.
3. paraphrasing or quoting someone without attributing the quote in your
speech.
4. working with someone (other than me or my designee) to construct your
speech and presenting it as your own.
5. turning in someone else’s outline.
6. using the words of published materials on your outline without attributing the
source.
If you have any doubt, please talk to me prior to giving the speech.
