Course Description

This course is designed to present theories and concepts which deal with clients presenting problems relating to psychosocial adjustments, emotional stress, and behavioral dysfunction. Concurrent clinical experience provides the opportunity for the student to utilize the nursing process with increasing independence.

Course Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Evaluate practices within the scope of the professional nurse by achieving a high level of professional ethics.
  2. Demonstrate effective therapeutic communication with clients and health care team members within the mental health setting.
  3. Assess clients with psychiatric disorders using the nursing process to promote health and safety.
  4. Evaluate nursing care using evidence- based research for clinical decision making.
  5. Demonstrate caring interventions across the life span including palliative and end of life care needs for client and/or significant others.
  6. Formulate a teaching plan for the client that promotes informed decision making for positive client outcomes.
  7. Collaborate with the client and health care team in shared planning, decision making and goal-setting to provide quality patient care.
  8. Identify effective resources to meet client needs.
