This is a survey course intended for health career students. The structure and function of human tissue, organs, and systems will be studied. Strong emphasis is placed on developing basic skills in medical terminology. AAS: Life science (Laboratory science) elective.

Course Information
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Be able to describe or demonstrate an understanding of the basic chemical processes occurring in the human body.
- Utilize a basic working knowledge of medical terminology.
- Be able to name and identify the basic organs and related structures of the eleven human organ systems on models, cats, cadavers, pictures, or drawings.
- Be able to effectively use directional, sectional, and planar terms to locate or identify structures or organs in the human body.
- Be able to list and explain the major functions of each organ or organ system in the human body.
- Be able to explain and demonstrate knowledge of the interrelationships of structures, organs, and organ systems to homeostasis.

Course Policies
During the semester, Canvas will drop your two lowest terminology quizzes out of the 12 taken and the two lowest lab reports out of the 15 assigned.
Therefore, there are no make-ups for term quizzes.
Terminology quizzes must be taken during the assigned dates and times on Canvas.
If you arrive late for a lecture quiz, the exam time will NOT be extended to accommodate you.
If you know in advance that you are going to miss a lecture quiz, contact me and the Dean of Liberal Arts.
You will have five school days to take the make-up quiz.
Make-up lecture quizzes are to be taken at the testing center (for testing center information go to KCC’s website and click on “testing services” under “Current Students”).
Exam makeup center schedule and information
Labs reports are due at the beginning of your next lab section.
Note: you must have attended the lab to turn in a lab report for that given lab.
Your lowest two lab report scores are also dropped.
Due to this, there are no make-ups for labs. This includes the terminology final.
There is no make-up lab practical final.
Laboratory Safety:
Attendance at the first laboratory meeting is required. A student may not participate in lab if they have missed the first lab meeting, which includes the mandatory lab safety training. If a student misses the first lab meeting, they must notify the instructor to make arrangements to make up the safety training before the second lab meeting.
Students are expected to comply with the KCC Laboratory Safety Rules at all times.
These rules will be discussed during the first lab meeting and each student will sign an acknowledgement receipt and understanding. Students who do not comply with the safety rules will be asked to leave the lab and will receive no credit for that day’s work.
Classroom Etiquette:
- Attendance: Attending class and being an active participant are crucial to your success in this course.
- Please turn off all electronic devices (cell phones, headphones, etc.) prior to the start of class/ lab to prevent class disruption.
- Pencil (#2) must be used on all exams. None will be provided.
- Safety goggles must be worn while handling specimens or chemicals.
- Audio recordings: Students may make audio recordings of lecture and/ or lab for their own personal use while enrolled in this class. However, the student may not share and/ or distribute these recordings without the expressed written consent of the instructor.
