Course Description

Topics include sets, real numbers, factoring, functions, expressions (polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and radical), equations (linear, absolute value, rational, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, and radical) and inequalities (linear and absolute value). Systems of three equations and complex numbers are introduced. Word problems are studied in detail. Skills for success in transfer-level mathematics courses are emphasized.

Prerequisites

MATH 1414 with a grade of C or better or appropriate assessment score

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  2. Solve and graph inequalities in two variables.
  3. Solve simple rational equations and identify extraneous solutions.

Methods of Evaluation

This course will be evaluated by performance on homework (objectives, pie progress), tests, and a comprehensive final exam.

Course Policies

Academic Integrity: By enrolling in this course, you are agreeing to complete all the work yourself. If you are caught submitting someone else’s work, you may automatically receive an F for the course.

Attendance Policy: You are considered attending when you attend the scheduled classes and when you log into ALEKS.  While attendance is not part of your grade, you are responsible for the material covered during any missed classes.  You are more successful if you attend class.

Knowledge Checks: You will be completing an initial knowledge check so that ALEKS will know what topics you already have mastered so it won’t assign you those topics. Periodically you will need to complete another knowledge check. ALEKS is checking what you remember from the material you have learned. Take these knowledge checks seriously because if you answer questions incorrectly, it will remove those topics from your pie and you will have to relearn them. It is a good idea to take organized notes while doing your homework so you can refer to them as you are doing the knowledge checks. Think of the knowledge checks as reviewing for a test.

Pie Progress: As you master topics in ALEKS, you are completing the pie. Your goal is to complete at least 50% of the pie by the mid semester and 100% of the pie by the end of the semester.

Objectives: The objectives are divided up into 15 modules and are assigned and completed using ALEKS. Since this is an 8 week class, you will be completing two modules per week.  As many opportunities as necessary are granted to achieve full credit, thus, persistence is the key. Homework is your opportunity to practice and master the material. The objective modules are due on the time and date listed in ALEKS. No late work is accepted but I tend to be lenient when there is a lot of communication from the student.

Tests: There will be a test after every two modules. I will replace your lowest test score with your final exam grade so if you miss a test, you will have the opportunity to replace the zero with your final exam grade. The tests will be taken in class each Monday on paper. You are allowed both sides of a 3x5 inch notecard of notes during the test. I don't allow makeups of tests but I tend to be more lenient when a student communicates right away with me about a missed test.

Final Exam: The final exam will be taken in class on Thursday, July 23, 4 - 6 PM. This exam will be done on paper.  You are allowed both sides of an 8.5x11 inch sheet of paper of notes during the exam.

Calculator Usage Policy: A scientific calculator is needed for this class. Cell phones are not permitted for calculator usage during tests. If you do not have a calculator, you can borrow one from the library.
