Course Description

Integration techniques, indeterminate forms, improper integrals, and power series expansions are the principal topics of the course. Specific topics include integration (by parts, substitutions, partial fractions, and inverse circular and hyperbolic functions), L'Hopital's rule, convergences tests for infinite series, and Taylor polynomials.

Course Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Apply integration by parts, partial fractions, and trigonometric substitutions to solve integral problems.
  2. Solve indeterminate forms of limit problems using l’Hopital’s Rule.
  3. Identify and evaluate simple improper integrals
  4. Identify infinite series as convergent or divergent using the basic tests presented.
  5. Expand simple analytic functions in a Taylor series.
  6. Find the derivatives of parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas using implicit differentiation.

Course Policies

Attendance
Attendance is mandatory. To be successful in this course, a student must attend class every day. You are responsible for work missed due to absence. There will be no distinction between “excused” and“unexcused” absences. If you come in after class has started, you may be marked absent. Leaving class early will also be noted. Attendance will not count toward your grade but will factor into your overall success in the class.
**Note: Math can be taught in the classroom, but can only be learned through practice, critical thinking, and more practice. Please ask questions to help further your understanding, either in class or during office hours.Calculus requires not only knowledge of algebraic procedures but also creative, critical thinking that needs to be developed. You are expected to attend each class period.


Cell Phones, Other Distractions
Please refrain from using cell phones for calls, texting, etc, while in class. If it is an emergency, please leave the classroom. Using cell phones or other electronic devices during the taking of tests/quizzes will be considered cheating and will be subject to the guidelines below.


Cheating/Plagiarizing
Students who are found cheating on any assessment will receive a grade of zero on that assessment after the first occurrence and an F for the entire course after the second occurrence. Using AI tools, such as ChatGPT and Photomath, will be considered cheating.


Calculator Usage
Graphing calculators will be required throughout this course, except on specific items chosen by your instructor. You cannot share calculators during quizzes or exams. You can use cell phone calculators on non-assessments (regular class). More specific instructions about allowed calculators will be given in class.

Expectations for Classroom and Online Behavior

This is a college-level course, and students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional, respectful, and responsible manner in both the classroom and online learning environment. Because Calculus & Analytic Geometry II is an accelerated summer course, consistent attendance, preparation, and participation are essential for success.

Classroom Expectations

Students are expected to arrive on time, remain for the full class period, and come prepared with completed notes, assigned work, questions, textbook/course materials, and an approved calculator. Attendance is expected at every class meeting, and students are responsible for any work missed due to absence. The syllabus emphasizes that math is learned through “practice, critical thinking, and more practice,” so students should actively participate, ask questions, and engage with problem-solving during class.

Students should remain focused during class and avoid distractions. Cell phones should not be used for texting, calls, social media, or unrelated activities during instruction. If there is an emergency, students should step quietly outside the classroom. Electronic devices may only be used for approved course-related purposes.

Students are expected to treat the instructor and classmates with respect. This includes listening when others are speaking, using appropriate language, participating constructively, and helping maintain a positive learning environment. Disruptive behavior, side conversations, or repeated distractions may interfere with others' learning and are not appropriate in a college classroom.

Online Wednesday Expectations

Wednesday online work is a required part of the course, not an optional activity. Students are expected to log in to Canvas, review the assigned lesson materials, watch required videos, complete notes, participate in online activities when assigned, and submit work by the posted deadlines.

Students should treat the online classroom with the same seriousness as an in-person class. Discussion posts, messages, uploaded assignments, and emails should be respectful, clear, and appropriate for a college course. Students should avoid informal texting language when communicating with the instructor or classmates.

Because this is a hybrid course, the syllabus notes that students are expected to complete outside-of-class work, including watching videos, taking comprehensive notes, and coming to class prepared to discuss and ask questions about the material.

Communication Expectations

Students should communicate early if they are confused, falling behind, or experiencing issues that may affect their progress. Questions are encouraged, especially in a fast-paced summer course. Students may ask questions during class, during office hours, or through Canvas/email as directed by the instructor.

Professional communication includes using a clear subject line, identifying the course section, explaining the question or concern clearly, and allowing a reasonable time for a response.

By remaining enrolled in this course, students are expected to:

  • Attend class regularly and arrive prepared.
  • Complete online work on time by Wednesday.
  • Participate in class and online.
  • Bring required materials, including a graphing calculator.

This course moves quickly, but students who stay engaged, practice consistently, and communicate early will be in the best position to succeed.
