* Students may be required to participate in additional lab time outside of class for the purpose of demonstrating proficiency in Entry-Level Skills.

Course Description

This course requires students to apply previously learned concepts and skills to selected neurological patient conditions. Laboratory practice will allow hands-on application of selected data collection skills including: arousal, mentation, and cognition; assistive devices; gait, balance, and locomotion; neuromotor development; and postural alignment. In addition, students will apply therapeutic interventions including, but not limited to: functional training; balance and coordination training; postural awareness training; neuromotor rehabilitation techniques; and establishment and implementation of a HEP. Students will develop the ability to safely and effectively implement progress, adjust and document interventions to patient conditions across the life span utilizing critical thinking while following the established plan of care developed by the physical therapist.

Advanced Intermediate Performance
  • At this level, performance in required concepts and skills is performed given progressively complex patient scenarios in the laboratory and/or clinical setting. The student is consistent and proficient in simple concepts and skills (>80%) requires general supervision, clinical problem solving, and interventions/data collection and demonstrates consistency, efficiency, and proficiency with complex concepts and skills, clinical problem solving, and interventions/data collection. The student completes the tasks in less than the allotted time provided with all skills completed accurately.
  • Safety is not compromised.
  • Documentation: the student will be able to consistently complete accurate and thorough documentation of physical therapy interventions with minimal assistance (<25% verbal cues). The student will consistently document patient responses and clearly relate them to the plan of care, use a professional tone with correct medical terminology and abbreviations, and produce documentation that is clear, concise, and easy to follow, demonstrating efficient and timely completion with minimal need for adjustment.
  • Billing: The student will be able to independently and consistently select appropriate CPT codes, calculate units, and apply billing rules (including the 8-minute rule) in structured scenarios with minimal assistance. The student will accurately link billing to documentation, providing a clear rationale for services rendered, and demonstrate efficient, compliant, and organized billing practices with rare need for correction.
