Course Description

The purpose and function of AC and DC motor controls is covered in this course. By using motor control symbols and line diagrams, students will install and troubleshoot various industrial control circuits found in a modern industrial setting. Students will be required to earn third-party certification for Arc Flash Safety. Basic tools must be supplied by the students.

Course Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Be knowledgeable of the dangers associated with electrical power and apply safe work practices.
  2. Apply timers in motor control diagrams.
  3. Define the motors reduced-voltage starting.
  4. Determine different methods of reversing motors.
  5. Describe accelerating and decelerating methods used in motor control.
  6. Understand the operation and application of motor control electronics.
  7. Understand basic electrical symbols and abbreviations and be able to interpret electrical diagrams.
  8. Define elements of power distribution systems.
  9. Define basic logic functions and their implementation in control circuits.
  10. Use various control devices in motor control applications.
  11. Apply various sensing devices for motor control.
  12. Describe solenoids and their applications.
  13. Understand the difference between contactors and motor starters.
  14. Describe control relays applications.

Tools: Tools are required to be purchased by every student to use during lab. A list of the minimum number of tools needed is provided, but a set of tools can be purchased at the bookstore that is the same set used in the Code and Wiring (NEC) course.

Methods of Evaluation

Student achievement in the classroom phase of the course will be evaluated based on homework, quizzes, labs, midterm lab exam and final exam, comprised of a lab portion, written portion, and troubleshooting portion. Achievement in the laboratory will be evaluated based on the accuracy and completeness of reports of laboratory activities and of skills developed in the performance of manipulative tasks as evidenced by the workmanship demonstrated in the laboratory assignments.

NOTE: The following evaluation method may be modified by the instructor as required. Letter grades are determined by the following percentage:

93 - 100 A 85 – 92.9 B 78 – 84.9 C 71 – 77.9 D BELOW 71 F

Grading for this class will be based on the following:

Quizzes 15%

Midterm Lab Exam 20%

Final exam 30%

Course Policies

Attendance:

If a student in the course at any time feels ill or is off their game, stay home. Send an email or call and leave a message to your instructor, and we will figure out other arrangements for the completion of course materials.

If a student has missed more class hours than the number of credit hours to be earned in the class, the instructor may record the grade of "F" for the course. Missed classes may not be made up without prior permission from the instructor. Failure of the student to attend class does not constitute withdrawal. A formal written withdrawal must be made by the student to the Office of Admissions and Records. Some important information provided during the lecture/discussions does not appear in your textbook, but you will find it useful for completing your assignments or exams. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain handouts and information presented for any class for which he/she is absent from fellow students or the instructor.

Assignments:

Homework is due at the start of class on the day due. Canvas homework is accepted on-line only. Written homework can be turned in via department mailbox in Room W102. The administrative assistant will take the assignment from you at the counter and place it in your instructor’s mailbox. Make sure you know the name of your instructor.

Assignments can still be submitted one week after their due date for a deduction of 8% each day that they are late but will not be accepted past that one extra week. If they are still not submitted after that week, a score of 0 will be recorded. Get your homework done in a timely manner!

Lab Policy:

The students will be required to purchase basic tools used in the laboratory

experiments.

Labs are due at the end of each lab period. If a student needs to leave class early without finishing the lab or must miss a lab for any reason, they need prior approval from the instructor or will receive a score of 0 for that lab with no opportunity for making up the lab. A lab that is missed for an excused reason must be made up in one week. Failure to complete the lab in one week will result in a score of 0.

Labs in this course MUST be signed by an instructor and cannot be signed off by a tutor. Since we use higher voltages than other courses, an instructor MUST be present to turn on your circuit and check its functionality. As such, if you miss a lab, inform your instructor before class and reach out to one of the other instructors to see if you can attend their class for that lab. Contact information for each instructor, as well as their section schedules, is on the first page of this syllabus. Make sure to get permission before showing up. There are very few seats in each class, so there is no guarantee that you will be able to make up the lab with another section. It is your responsibility to make up missed labs on time.

Tools:

Tools are required for class after the second week. Students must purchase tools to use in the course. A handheld multimeter will be provided for use in class, but all other tools must be purchased. All students will bring in their tools the second week of class to check that they have the required tools, so that they can be sure that they are ready for the labs starting in week 3. If a student shows up to lab without the required tools, they will receive a 0 for that lab.

Quiz Policy:

Quizzes are administered online on Canvas and must be completed in a classroom with an instructor present. If you cannot attend class to take a quiz or are running late, you must notify the instructor prior to the start time of the class. You must notify the instructor by phone, email, or in-person. You must make advance arrangements to make up the quiz. The date and time of the makeup quiz must be mutually agreed to by the instructor and student. All makeup quizzes must be completed within one week after the scheduled quiz; otherwise, the student will receive a 0 for the quiz. The instructor reserves the right to provide a different make-up quiz. Any student missing a quiz without notifying the instructor in advance will receive a zero for the quiz. Only 3 quizzes can be made up for missing class or being late. Any missed quizzes after those 3 will receive a score of 0. Get to class on time!

Safety Policy:

School code requires that safety glasses or some other APPROVED form of eye

protection is always worn in the laboratory. There will be NO exceptions! Students will be required to earn third-party certification for Arc Flash Safety on-line. This certificate is part of the total grade and must be received by Thanksgiving.
