Course Description

This is designed as a refresher course to help prepare first year registered nursing students for the mathematics competency test taken in RNUR 1129. Topics include systems of measurement, use of formulas, dimensional analysis, solutions, and dosage calculations.

Prerequisites: RNUR 1106 - Must be taken either prior or at the same time as this course. This is designed as a refresher course to help prepare first year registered nursing students for the mathematics competency test taken in RNUR 1129. Topics include systems of measurement, use of formulas, dimensional analysis, solutions, and dosage calculations.

Course Information

Course Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify symbols and interpret measures in the metric, apothecary and household systems.
  2. Convert between units of measurement within the same system.
  3. Convert units of measurement from one system to another.
  4. Calculate drug dosages using the dimensional analysis method.
  5. Calculate drug dosages using the formula method (D/H x Q = X).
  6. Calculate oral and parenteral doseforms, insulin, and pediatric dosage.

Methods of Evaluation

Grading Scale: The course will be graded on a straight scale (no curve). Grades are assigned based on the following percentages; 90-100% = A, 84-89% = B, 80-83% = C, and 0-79% = F.

 

Points: 3 Lecture Exams (50 pts each) 150

Homework (5 pts each) 20

Make-up policy:

 

Articles, Discussions, Homework, and Reading Quizzes: One article, homework, and reading quiz will be dropped in Canvas. Therefore, there are no make-up reading quizzes. Furthermore, due to the dropped assignments, no late articles, discussions, or homework will be accepted. All articles, discussions, homework, and reading quizzes will be opened at the beginning of the semester. The specific due dates can be found in Canvas.

 

Exams: You will have 3 days during which you can take the online, timed exam. The midterm will be 50 multiple choice questions and the final will be 100 multiple choice questions. Both the midterm and final exam will be worth 50 points total.
