This course serves as a foundation for Automotive Technology students by introducing the essential knowledge, safety practices, tools, equipment, and work habits required in an automotive repair environment. Topics include workshop safety, the proper use of lifts and jacks, hand and power tools, and other fundamental shop skills.
The course prepares students for the hands-on technical courses that follow by establishing safe and professional work practices and developing the foundational skills needed to perform automotive service and repair procedures.

Course Information
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Observe and follow the safety and environmental regulations set by the instructor, school, city, county and state in an automotive lab setting.
- Identify the USA customary and metric measuring systems associated with the automotive industry through hands on training utilizing basic hand tools, fasteners, and thread repair kits.
- Identify and utilize the labs automotive repair manuals/available online information systems, lab vehicles, and the Learning Resource Center to look up and complete minor maintenance repair procedures.
- Utilize the labs automotive Flat Rate manuals and/or online information systems to calculate the actual repair time and the time set by the manufacture to complete a repair.
Electude Automotive Training — online learning platform used for assigned learning modules, preparation, and reinforcement of course material.
Safety glasses are required at all times in the automotive laboratory.
Safety glasses must be:
- Clear
- Z87 rated
Dark, tinted, or sunglasses-style safety glasses are not permitted.
Students who require prescription eyewear may wear prescription glasses under or with approved safety eyewear. A face shield may also be required for grinding, cutting, or other operations that create additional hazards.
Shop-appropriate clothing: Students must wear appropriate clothing for the automotive lab. Students who are not appropriately dressed may be sent home.

Electude Learning Modules: Electude modules are learning activities designed to prepare students for classroom instruction and hands-on application. Modules completed by the assigned deadline with a score of 60% or higher receive full credit. Late modules receive a maximum of 50% of the available points.

Automotive Technology
1. Attendance, Punctuality & Participation
Attendance is critical to success in this course. Automotive Technology is a hands-on program, and important skills, procedures, safety practices, and laboratory activities are taught and practiced during class. The laboratory activities in this course are an essential part of the learning process and may not be easily replicated outside of scheduled class time.
Students are expected to:
- Attend every scheduled class.
- Arrive on time and remain for the entire class period.
- Be prepared to participate in classroom and laboratory activities.
- Notify the instructor as soon as possible when an absence is unavoidable.
- Take responsibility for obtaining missed course information and completing any work that can reasonably be completed outside of class.
Make-up opportunities for missed laboratory activities are not guaranteed. When an absence occurs for an appropriate or unavoidable circumstance, the instructor may provide an opportunity to make up missed work when practical and when the necessary equipment, vehicles, facilities, and instructional time are available. The instructor will determine whether a make-up opportunity is appropriate.
Students who miss a class are responsible for communicating with the instructor regarding the absence. Students who repeatedly miss class, fail to communicate with the instructor, or do not make a reasonable effort to address missed required work may be required to withdraw from the course.
Because this is a hands-on course, missing class without making an effort to address the missed work may result in the student being unable to successfully complete the course.
Tardiness
Class begins promptly at 9:00 AM. Students are expected to be present and ready to participate at the scheduled start time.
Frequent or excessive tardiness may interfere with the student's ability to participate in required instruction and laboratory activities. If a student arrives after a timed assessment has begun, the instructor may restrict participation in that assessment unless prior arrangements or an approved circumstance exist.
Bottom line: Show up, be on time, and stay for the full class — it’s the only way to succeed in this course.
2. Professionalism & Conduct
Attendance, attitude, cooperation, responsibility, and work habits are important components of success in the automotive industry.
- Cell phones must be silenced and stored away during class.
- No headphones or earbuds are permitted in the classroom or shop.
- Smartwatches are treated as cell phones and may not be used during class.
- Bring required materials to every class, including a pencil, notebook, notes, textbook/materials, and handouts.
- Students must have appropriate PPE for the shop. Closed-toe shoes, safety glasses, and traditional-length T-shirts are the minimum requirements.
3. Auto Tech Lab – Shop Safety Rules
Safety is the highest priority in the automotive laboratory.
- Safety glasses must be worn at all times in the shop.
- Obtain instructor approval before using shop equipment, cutting tools, or abrasive tools.
- Inform the instructor of any leftover parts after a job.
- Clean, arrange, and return all tools and manuals after use.
- Get instructor permission before bringing a vehicle into the shop.
- Place keys on the driver-side dashboard when finished with a vehicle. Never place tools or keys in your pocket.
- Check battery state of charge after servicing. Leaving a dead battery will result in a lab grade penalty.
4. Lab Conduct & Responsibilities
Students are responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and professional work environment.
- Leave your work area spotless, regardless of its condition when you began.
- Report all accidents and broken tools immediately.
- Smoking is prohibited in all KCC buildings, including electronic versions.
- Always connect an exhaust hose to running vehicles to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Disconnect the battery before performing service on the vehicle when required by the service procedure.
- Jacks are for lifting only — always use jack stands before working underneath a vehicle.
5. Electude Learning & Late Work
Electude modules are learning activities, not quizzes or tests. They are designed to prepare students for classroom instruction, discussion, hands-on activities, and assessments.
Students are expected to complete assigned Electude learning modules by the posted deadline.
- 🟢 Completed on time with a score of 60% or higher: Full credit
- 🟡 Completed on time with a score below 60%: Student may be required to review the material and demonstrate additional understanding.
- 🔴 Completed after the deadline: Maximum of 50% of the available points
Electude modules remain available after the deadline so students can return to previous material for review and reinforcement. The purpose of the assignments is learning and preparation for class; the deadline establishes accountability for completing that learning on time.
6. Attendance, Preparation & Participation
Students are expected to arrive prepared to participate in classroom and laboratory activities. Completion of assigned Electude learning activities before class is an important part of preparation.
Students are responsible for reviewing material they miss because of an absence and communicating with the instructor regarding missed hands-on activities or assessments.
7. Specific Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, students will:
- Practice safe and efficient use of automotive tools and equipment.
- Demonstrate knowledge of relevant physical, chemical, and mathematical concepts.
- Show the ability to work cooperatively while taking initiative in completing tasks.
- Plan, problem-solve, and execute repair and maintenance tasks independently.
Students are expected to arrive on time and fully prepared for every class session and laboratory period. Punctuality is essential for maintaining a productive learning environment and ensuring all students receive the full benefit of instruction.
Collaboration is an important part of this course. Students are expected to work respectfully and effectively with classmates, contribute to group activities, and maintain a positive, professional attitude in all interactions.
Safety is the highest priority in the shop. Students must follow all shop safety rules, wear required personal protective equipment, and use tools and equipment only as instructed. Unsafe behavior, horseplay, or disregard for safety protocols may result in removal from the laboratory and additional disciplinary action.
All assigned homework, Electude learning modules, quizzes, and chapter assessments must be completed by 11:59 PM on the assigned due date. Electude modules remain available after the due date for review and reinforcement. Late work is subject to the course late-work policy.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Usage Policy – Automotive Technology
Artificial Intelligence tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and other AI systems can be valuable learning and research tools. In the Automotive Technology program, AI must be used responsibly to support—not replace—hands-on skills, critical thinking, and independent learning.
Acceptable Uses
Students may use AI for:
- Summarizing textbook or course material to aid study.
- Generating practice questions for ASE-style exam preparation.
- Reviewing industry terminology or concepts.
- Creating study guides or outlines.
- Checking grammar or formatting.
- Brainstorming approaches to problems when the student still performs the actual work and verification.
Unacceptable Uses
Students may not use AI to:
- Submit AI-generated work as their own without appropriate revision or acknowledgment.
- Fabricate data, measurements, test results, or diagnostic findings.
- Bypass assigned learning activities, Electude modules, research, or hands-on work by relying solely on AI-generated answers.
- Use AI during closed-book exams, quizzes, or hands-on performance assessments unless explicitly authorized by the instructor.
- Enter confidential customer, vehicle, or proprietary information into AI tools.
- Use AI to generate vehicle-specific service or repair information in place of the required service information or manufacturer documentation.
Academic and Technical Responsibility
Students are responsible for the accuracy of their work, regardless of whether AI was used during the learning process. AI-generated information may be inaccurate or incomplete and must be independently verified using appropriate course resources and professional service information.
Students must develop and demonstrate hands-on automotive skills independently. AI is a supplemental learning tool, not a substitute for learning, practicing, measuring, diagnosing, or performing the work.
Consequences for Misuse
Misuse of AI may result in:
- Loss of credit for the assignment.
- Additional work to demonstrate independent competency.
- Referral for academic integrity review under college policy.
Guiding Principle
AI should be used as a supplemental tool—like a scan tool, service manual, or multimeter—not as a replacement for learning, practicing, and thinking for yourself.
