Hybrid Course Format
AUTO 2331 Electrified Vehicle Safety is designed to provide students with the foundational knowledge and safety practices required to work around hybrid and electric vehicles. The course emphasizes high-voltage safety, personal protective equipment (PPE), vehicle disable procedures, hazard recognition, and industry-standard safety protocols used when servicing electrified vehicles.
This course supports the Electrified Vehicle I certificate and serves as an entry point into advanced electrified vehicle training within the Automotive Technology Program. Students will develop skills that prepare them for additional coursework in electrified vehicle diagnostics, service, and repair.
Course content is aligned with current industry practices and supports preparation for industry-recognized electrified vehicle safety training and ASE xEV career pathways. Students will develop foundational safety competencies necessary for continued education and employment in the electrified vehicle service industry.

Course Information
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Apply proper lockout/tagout procedures to ensure the safe handling and servicing of electric vehicles.
- Classify electric vehicles, explain their basic operation, and identify key components and systems.
- Identify and analyze the dangers of working on electrified vehicles, explaining electrical risks and safety precautions to mitigate hazards.
- Identify emergency response roles for electrified vehicle incidents, understand response protocols, and ensure safety and coordination during an emergency.
- Explain the purpose and function of a high-voltage interlock system in an electrified vehicle.

Course Materials
Students will utilize Electude online learning modules, instructor-developed course materials, OEM service information, and hands-on laboratory activities throughout the course. All course assignments, announcements, grades, assessments, and supplemental materials will be distributed through Canvas.
Specialized high-voltage personal protective equipment (PPE), insulated tools, testing equipment, and training aids required for laboratory activities will be provided by Kankakee Community College.
Because this is a hybrid course, students are expected to have reliable internet access and the ability to complete online coursework between scheduled face-to-face class meetings.
Final course grades will be determined using the following grading categories:
- Electude Learning Modules – 35%
- Hands-On Laboratory Activities – 35%
- Quizzes, Tests, and Final Assessment – 30%
Electude Learning Modules
Electude modules are learning activities, not quizzes or tests. They are designed to prepare students for classroom instruction, discussion, hands-on activities, and assessments.
- 🟢 Completed by the deadline with a score of 60% or higher: Full credit
- 🟡 Completed by the deadline with a score below 60%: Credit will be based on the student's demonstrated completion and understanding of the assigned material.
- 🔴 Completed after the deadline: Maximum of 50% of available points
Electude modules remain available after the deadline so students can return to previous material for review and reinforcement.
Late work will not prevent students from accessing previously completed learning material. The purpose of the deadline is to establish when the learning is expected to be completed, not to prevent students from reviewing the material later.
All homework must be completed before the final class meeting or final assessment. No regular homework assignments will be due after the final class meeting or final examination.

Attendance, Punctuality & Participation
Attendance is critical to success in this course. Electrified Vehicle Safety is a hands-on course, and important safety procedures, demonstrations, and laboratory activities are completed during scheduled class meetings.
Students are expected to attend every scheduled class, arrive on time, remain for the entire class period, and participate in required classroom and laboratory activities.
Make-up opportunities for missed laboratory activities are not guaranteed. When an absence occurs under appropriate circumstances, the instructor may provide an opportunity to make up missed work when practical and when the necessary equipment, vehicles, facilities, and instructional time are available.
Students who miss class are responsible for communicating with the instructor and making a reasonable effort to address missed work.
Because this course contains critical safety and laboratory activities, students who repeatedly miss class, fail to communicate about absences, or do not make a reasonable effort to address missed required work may be required to withdraw from the course.
Electude Learning
Students are responsible for completing assigned Electude learning modules by the published deadlines.
Electude modules are learning activities designed to prepare students for classroom instruction and hands-on application. Students are encouraged to return to completed modules after the deadline to review and reinforce course material.
Electude modules completed by the assigned deadline with a score of 60% or higher receive full credit. Electude modules completed after the assigned deadline are eligible for a maximum of 50% of the available credit.
All assigned homework must be completed before the final class meeting or final assessment.
Expectations for Classroom and Online Behavior
Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner consistent with industry expectations. Respect for fellow students, instructors, equipment, facilities, and vehicles is required at all times.
Classroom Expectations
• Arrive on time and prepared for scheduled face-to-face meetings.
• Participate actively in classroom discussions, demonstrations, and safety activities.
• Follow all instructor directions and safety requirements.
• Cell phones should not be used during instruction unless authorized by the instructor for educational purposes.
• Headphones, earbuds, and other personal audio devices are not permitted during classroom or laboratory activities.
• Students are expected to maintain a professional and respectful learning environment.
Online Expectations
• Complete all Electude assignments and assessments by the assigned due dates.
• Check Canvas and KCC email regularly for announcements, assignment updates, and course communications.
• Maintain academic integrity on all assignments, quizzes, tests, and assessments.
• Communicate professionally when using email, Canvas messages, discussion boards, or other electronic communication tools.
• Students are responsible for monitoring assignment deadlines and requirements.
Laboratory Expectations
• Safety glasses meeting ANSI Z87.1 standards must be worn during laboratory activities.
• Students must wear work pants or jeans and a short-sleeve shirt appropriate for laboratory activities.
• Follow all high-voltage safety procedures and instructor directions at all times.
• Required personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn whenever directed by the instructor.
• Remove jewelry, watches, rings, necklaces, conductive metal objects, and other items that may create an electrical hazard before participating in high-voltage activities.
• Use tools, meters, and equipment only after receiving proper instruction and authorization.
• Report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, injuries, or near-miss incidents immediately.
• Horseplay, distractions, or unsafe conduct will not be tolerated during laboratory activities.
• Students are expected to treat all high-voltage systems as energized until proper testing and verification procedures have been completed.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy
Artificial Intelligence tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and similar technologies may be used to support learning, studying, and understanding course concepts.
AI may be used for study guides, practice questions, reviewing terminology, summarizing course material, and other instructor-approved learning activities.
AI may not be used to replace independent learning, critical thinking, hands-on practice, measuring, diagnosing, or performing automotive service procedures.
Students may not use AI to generate answers for quizzes, tests, certification preparation activities, or other graded assessments unless specifically authorized by the instructor.
Students are responsible for verifying AI-generated information using appropriate course materials, service information, and instructor guidance.
Any work submitted for grading must accurately represent the student's own knowledge and understanding. Misuse of AI may result in loss of credit, additional work to demonstrate competency, or academic integrity review consistent with college policy.
AI is a supplemental learning tool—not a substitute for learning, practicing, measuring, diagnosing, or performing the work.
This course is designed to develop safe, skilled, and professional technicians. Students are expected to demonstrate the same level of responsibility, professionalism, and attention to safety that would be required in a professional electrified vehicle service environment.
