Course Information
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Render the human form accurately using various drawing media and techniques.
- Understand the basic proportions of the human body, including the musculature and skeletal system.
- Develop well rendered drawings relying only on personal drawing skills, observation, and creative problem solving.
- Identify various artists who concentrate on the human form in their art.

Textbook: None required.
Supplies:
Canson Drawing Pads 18 x 24” 50 sheets or more
Newsprint – 1 pad, 100 or more sheets each
Faber Castell Studio Soft Pastel set (12-48)
Erasers – Magic rub and kneaded
Charcoal / charcoal pencils / vine charcoal
Various drawing pencils and supplies as needed
Grades are based on a number of factors:
1. Improvement in drawing the Human Figure
2. Meeting required deadlines
3. Attendance is required - Wednesday only
4. Attitude and class participation (working in class)
5. Exploration and creativity (push your work to the limit!)
A - 90 - 100%
B - 80 - 89%
C - 70 - 79%
D - 60 - 69%
F - 59 or below

Critique:
Critique is a very important element of this class. Participation in class critiques
and discussions are required. Failure to participate will affect final grades.
When we have critique, it will typically be at the end of the session rather than
the beginning. It is expected that you will have input at each critique for your
fellow students.
Class attendance policy:
Class begins at 8:00. Because we have a model, we need to start immediately in order to be productive with our time. You should be prepared to draw, charcoal in hand, at that time. Please be respectful and be prompt. The door will be locked when the model is present.
You are allowed TWO absences! Use them wisely. After that, your grade may be dropped by a letter grade for each additional absence.
Homework policy:
Late work will be accepted with strict penalty. All late assignments will receive a
10% deduction per day. Assignments will be posted on CANVAS for your
convenience. You may ALWAYS feel free to redo and resubmit any homework assignment for a higher grade.
Hybrid:
Because this course is in a hybrid format, you will be doing a large amount of
work outside of the classroom. This will include separate units of study not
covered face-to-face. Check for updates every few days in CANVAS.
All assignments must be posted to CANVAS by the end of class on the day it is
due. EVEN IF I SEE YOUR ASSIGNMENT IN CLASS, it MUST STILL be
uploaded into the assignment. If it is NOT, you may receive a 0. Many
assignments here will be contingent on your submitting the work, so that others
may comment on it. Please bring all homework to class on the Wednesday it is due! Hang it up before the start of class.
I have a zero tolerance policy to videos in class. DO NOT watch any videos or play games on your phone at ANY point in class, other than break. When we are drawing, DRAW. If you violate this policy, you will need to leave your phone in your bag during class.
If you finish a work before the allotted time, you will need to find a new location and RE-DRAW the pose. The point of this class is to become very good at drawing the figure, so there will not be down time when done with a pose.
