The student will describe the basic systems in gasoline engines. He or she will identify the components of systems and explain principles of operation, maintenance, repair, and adjustment of these engines. From shop experiences, the student will acquire basic engine teardown and reassembly skills.
AUTO 1064 Internal Combustion Engines provides students with the knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to understand, service, diagnose, and repair modern internal combustion engines. The course emphasizes how engine systems and components work together to convert chemical energy into mechanical energy and how proper inspection, measurement, service procedures, and repair practices affect engine performance and durability.
Students will develop these skills through a combination of classroom instruction, selected Electude learning activities, instructor demonstrations, hands-on laboratory activities, engine disassembly and inspection, measurement, service procedures, and diagnostic exercises. Emphasis will be placed on using service information, proper measurement techniques, and evidence-based diagnostic procedures rather than relying on assumptions or parts replacement.
This course is part of the Automotive Technology program's engine sequence. Instructional content is intentionally divided between the two internal combustion engine courses so students can progressively develop their knowledge and skills. AUTO 1064 focuses on the engine's mechanical systems, construction, service, inspection, and repair, while related systems are addressed in other courses when appropriate. Cooling-system theory and service, for example, are incorporated into the Heating and Air Conditioning course rather than duplicated in this course.
Students will be expected to apply the diagnostic process of Observe → Verify → Diagnose → Service → Verify Again throughout laboratory activities. This approach develops the technician's ability to inspect components, determine expected conditions, perform accurate measurements, compare results with specifications, and make informed repair decisions.

Students are expected to use appropriate service information when performing inspections, measurements, service procedures, and repairs. Manufacturer specifications and procedures take precedence when performing actual engine service.
Note: Electude content will be assigned selectively. Not every Electude internal-combustion-engine module is required in this course. Assignments will be selected to support the material being taught in AUTO 1064 and to avoid unnecessary duplication with AUTO 1064's companion engine coursework and other Automotive Technology courses.
Final course grades will be determined using the following grading categories:
- Electude Learning Modules – 25%
- Hands-On Laboratory Activities – 40%
- Quizzes, Tests, and Practical Assessments – 35%
Electude Learning Modules
Electude modules are learning activities designed to reinforce classroom instruction and prepare students for hands-on engine service and repair. Because internal combustion engine content is divided between multiple courses, only selected Electude modules will be assigned in AUTO 1064.
🟢 Completed by the deadline with a score of 60% or higher: Full credit
🟡 Completed by the deadline with a score below 60%: Credit will be based on the student's demonstrated completion and understanding of the assigned material.
🔴 Completed after the deadline: Maximum of 50% of the available credit.
Electude assignments will be due by 11:59 PM on Tuesday, the evening before the Wednesday class, unless otherwise specified.
Electude modules remain available after the deadline so students can return to previous material for review and reinforcement.
Hands-On Laboratory Activities
Laboratory activities are a major component of this course. Students will be evaluated on their ability to safely use tools and equipment, follow service information, perform inspections and measurements, compare findings with specifications, and properly perform engine service and repair procedures.
Students may be evaluated on both the quality of the completed work and their ability to explain the procedures they performed and the reasoning behind their decisions.
Quizzes, Tests, and Practical Assessments
Written assessments and practical assessments will evaluate the student's understanding of internal combustion engine theory, component operation, service procedures, measurements, specifications, diagnosis, and repair.
Practical assessments may require students to independently demonstrate skills learned during laboratory activities and explain what they are doing, why they are doing it, what they expect to find, and what their results indicate.
All assigned homework must be completed before the final class meeting or final assessment. No regular homework assignments will be due after the final class meeting or final examination.

Attendance, Punctuality & Participation
Attendance is critical to success in this course. Internal Combustion Engines is a hands-on course, and important engine inspection, measurement, service, and repair procedures are completed during scheduled class meetings.
Students are expected to:
- Attend every scheduled class.
- Arrive on time and remain for the entire class period.
- Be prepared to participate in classroom and laboratory activities.
- Follow all laboratory safety procedures and instructor directions.
- Take responsibility for obtaining information missed because of an absence.
- Communicate with the instructor as soon as possible when an absence is unavoidable.
Make-up opportunities for missed laboratory activities are not guaranteed. When an absence occurs under appropriate circumstances, the instructor may provide an opportunity to make up missed work when practical and when the necessary equipment, engines, vehicles, facilities, and instructional time are available.
Students who miss class are responsible for communicating with the instructor and making a reasonable effort to address missed work. Because this course contains critical hands-on engine activities, students who repeatedly miss class, fail to communicate about absences, or do not make a reasonable effort to address missed required work may be required to withdraw from the course.
Electude Learning
Electude learning activities are used to reinforce classroom instruction and prepare students for hands-on engine service and repair. Because internal combustion engine content is divided between multiple courses, only selected Electude modules will be assigned in AUTO 1064.
Students will not be expected to complete every Electude engine module. Assignments will be selected based on their relevance to the material being taught and the laboratory activities being performed.
Electude assignments will be due by 11:59 PM Tuesday, the evening before class, unless otherwise specified.

Laboratory Expectations
Engine service and repair require careful inspection, accurate measurement, and attention to manufacturer specifications. Students are expected to approach laboratory activities as technicians rather than simply completing a checklist.
Students are expected to:
- Read the applicable service information before beginning a task.
- Identify the correct procedure and specifications before performing service.
- Use the appropriate tools and measuring equipment.
- Record accurate measurements.
- Compare measurements with manufacturer specifications.
- Identify components and conditions accurately.
- Follow proper disassembly and assembly procedures.
- Use correct torque procedures.
- Keep components organized during disassembly.
- Protect components and equipment from damage.
- Verify completed work before considering a task complete.
- Ask questions when they are uncertain about a procedure or specification.
The course emphasizes the diagnostic process:
Observe → Verify → Diagnose → Service → Verify Again
Students will be evaluated not only on whether a task is completed, but also on their ability to explain what they are inspecting, why they are performing the inspection or measurement, what they expect to find, and what the results indicate.
Engine Service Information & Specifications
Students are expected to use appropriate service information when performing engine inspection, measurement, service, and repair procedures. This may include OEM service information, ALLDATA, ShopKey, manufacturer specifications, Electude, and other instructor-approved resources.
Manufacturer specifications and procedures take precedence when performing actual engine service or repair.
Students should not guess at specifications, torque values, clearances, procedures, or repair decisions. When information is unavailable or unclear, students are expected to stop and locate the appropriate service information or ask the instructor.
Laboratory Safety
Students must follow all laboratory safety procedures and instructor directions.
- Clear safety glasses meeting ANSI Z87.1 standards must be worn during laboratory activities. Dark, tinted, or sunglasses-style safety glasses are not permitted.
- Work clothing must be appropriate for automotive laboratory activities.
- Inspect tools and equipment before use.
- Use tools and equipment only for their intended purpose.
- Follow proper procedures when operating engine stands, lifting equipment, rotating equipment, and other shop equipment.
- Keep hands, clothing, tools, and loose objects away from moving machinery.
- Properly support and secure engines and components before beginning work.
- Use appropriate lifting procedures and ask for assistance when necessary.
- Clean spills and maintain an organized work area.
- Report damaged equipment or unsafe conditions immediately.
When in doubt about a procedure or safety concern, stop and ask.
Professional Conduct
Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner consistent with expectations in the automotive service industry.
- Treat classmates, instructors, vehicles, tools, equipment, and facilities with respect.
- Follow instructor directions regarding the use of vehicles, engines, tools, and laboratory equipment.
- Keep the work area clean and organized.
- Return tools and equipment to their proper locations after use.
- Report broken or damaged equipment immediately.
- Cell phones must be silenced and stored away unless their use has been authorized for a course-related activity.
- Headphones and earbuds are not permitted during classroom or laboratory activities.
- Students are responsible for leaving their work area clean and ready for the next student.
Research & Emerging Engine Technology
The Chapter 9 Emerging Engine Technology Research assignment requires students to research a specific current or upcoming production engine and explain the technology in their own words.
Students must use reliable sources and are expected to understand the information they submit. The instructor may use Google Docs version history to review how the assignment was developed.
Students will also participate in a Technician-to-Technician peer review. Peer reviewers will evaluate whether the research demonstrates genuine understanding or appears to be primarily copied, AI-generated, or simply reworded from another source.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy
Artificial Intelligence tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and similar technologies may be used to support learning, studying, and understanding course concepts.
AI may be used for study guides, practice questions, reviewing terminology, summarizing course material, and other instructor-approved learning activities.
AI may not be used to replace independent learning, critical thinking, hands-on practice, measuring, diagnosing, or performing engine service and repair procedures.
Students may not use AI to generate answers for quizzes, tests, practical assessments, or other graded assessments unless specifically authorized by the instructor.
Students are responsible for verifying AI-generated information using appropriate course materials, service information, manufacturer specifications, and instructor guidance.
Any work submitted for grading must accurately represent the student's own knowledge and understanding. Misuse of AI may result in loss of credit, additional work to demonstrate competency, or academic integrity review consistent with college policy.
AI is a supplemental learning tool—not a substitute for learning, practicing, measuring, diagnosing, or performing the work.
Students are expected to maintain a professional and respectful learning environment in the classroom, laboratory, and online.

This 8-week course meets Wednesdays from 8:00 AM–1:00 PM. Electude assignments are due by 11:59 PM Tuesday, the evening before class, unless otherwise specified.
Electude learning activities are assigned to prepare students for the following class session. The instructor may adjust the laboratory packet or hands-on activities to match the needs of the class; however, the Electude assignments listed below are the required online homework.

Chapter 9 Research Assignment
The Next Generation of Engines Research assignment is a separate course assignment and is not an Electude module. Students will research an approved current or upcoming production engine and complete the provided research handout and Technician-to-Technician peer review.
The research assignment should be completed according to the deadline established by the instructor and must be completed before the final class meeting/final assessment.
Important Homework Note
The Electude modules listed in the Course Calendar are the required online homework for each week. Students should use the calendar to determine what must be completed before the next class meeting. Additional worksheets, laboratory packet pages, or instructor-assigned activities may be assigned in Canvas or during class.
