The student will describe engine lathe types and construction, milling machine types and construction, lathe cutting tools, and milling cutters. He or she will explain proper procedures for maintenance of the lathe and milling machines, for lathe facing operations, for lathe speeds and feeds, for center drilling in the lathe, for drilling, reaming, and straight turning in the lathe, for milling speeds and fees, and for basic milling operations. The student will describe necessary safety precautions for machine tool operations. The student will describe necessary safety precautions for working with the lathe and milling machines and demonstrate these procedures and operations in practical applications in the machine tool laboratory.

Course Information
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate safe operation of machine shop equipment
- Identify and safely operate the lathe and tooling
- Layout and machine a project from a given print
Textbook(s); Machine Tool Practices 10th edition
Supplies; Leather shoes, safety glasses, 6” dial calipers must be steel not plastic. ( NO DIGITAL CALIPERS), 6” steel rule, and a calculator. Phone calculators will not be allowed on quizzes and exams.

Quizzes 30% 100 to 90% = A
Labs 50% 89 to 80% =B
Final Exam 20% 79 to 70% =C
69 to 60% = D
59% and below = F
A final grade of a C or better is required to advance to Machine Tool III, and beyond.

Course Policies
. ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance at all scheduled class sessions is expected. If a student has missed more class hours than the number of credit hours to be earned in the class, the instructor may record the grade of “F” for the course. Four or more unexcused absences will result in an automatic failure of the course. Failure of the student to attend class does not constitute withdrawal. The student must make a formal written withdrawal through the Office of Admissions and Records. . Attendance is taken at the beginning and end of class. Attendance for the entire class period is mandatory. If you know you will not be in class, the student must inform the instructor prior to that class. Informing the instructor does not excuse the absence it only gives you the opportunity to make it up. The student will have two weeks from the date of absence to make up that class at the convenience of tsession. Makeup work must be done at the mutually scheduled time agreed upon between the student and instructor. There will be four required projects to be completed during the specified lab sessions. No work will be allowed outside of the KCC machine tool Lab. An unfinished project is a zero grade for that project.he instructor; no makeup will be accepted after 2 weeks and a “0” will be recorded for thaLAB MAKEUP & ADDITIONAL LAB TIME POLICY: Students will not be allowed to work in lab spaces outside of enrolled class times without prior approval or consent of instructor/program coordinator and under direct supervision of instructor/program coordinator. Additionally, students must email a summary to instructor including date and time spent in lab outside of the scheduled class time and what projects/objectives were attempted and what was accomplished. This must be received by the instructor within 24 hours of completion. If this is not done the student will receive a grade of “0” for the class session. No secondary makeups are allowed.
TARDINESS: Points will be heavily deducted from the student’s grades if the student arrives in class any time after the scheduled class time; Down to and including “0” points for that day.
Students found not to be wearing the proper eye protection will be required to write a one page paper on the reasons for safety glasses, and the possible affects of eye injury.
Machine Tool Lab Practices:
It is expected that all students will clean up the lab at the end of each class. Machine tools first before sweeping the floor. All tooling will be put away in the proper areas. All students are expected to participate in cleaning the lab until the lab is completely cleaned. Clean up, and personal productivity is mandatory, and will be reflected in the machine tool lab practice grade.
Withdrawals
When it is necessary to withdraw from a course or from the college, a student may do so on or before the withdrawal date without receiving a punitive final grade. Students should use Change of Schedule forms which are available in Student Services. Students may submit Change of Schedule forms to Student Services or through the mail, but they must be postmarked no later than the withdrawal date. No withdrawals are allowed by phone. To determine the last date to withdraw with a grade of “W” in this course, log into KCC connect and click on “my registration statement” under Academic Profile. The last date to withdraw from this course is 11/05/2026.

Anyone suspected, in the judgment of KCC faculty/administrators/security, to be under the influence of drugs, alcohol or other behavior-altering substances may be tested without notice according to board-approved procedures. Violation also includes failure to comply with college procedure for testing. The student will not be allowed back to class until college administrators has reviewed the incident.
