Course Description

This course surveys art from the 19th century to the present. Emphasis is on the forms and the aesthetic value of art objects as well as the cultural and historical conditions that shape art. Students are provided a basis for analyzing and appreciating contemporary art forms, including painting, sculpture, architecture, and photography. Students will complete writing assignments appropriate for the course and subject. Note: Because colleges divide historical periods differently, completing the entire Survey of Art sequence at one college is strongly recommended. Students cannot earn general education humanities credit for both ARTS 1623 and ARTS 1633.

Methods of Evaluation

Attendance/Participation: You are expected to log on to this course at least every 72 hours. Do not get into the habit of only logging on the evening before assignments are due or your grades will be affected.

Weekly Assignments: All assignments will be posted under the “modules” tab in CANVAS. You will need to check for assignments each week, and complete them by the time stated (typically Monday at midnight unless otherwise mentioned). They will primarily consist of textbook reading assignments (that have points attached), videos to watch (often with short quizzes) and discussion questions to answer. Outside sources (in addition to the text) need to be used in your research, so PLEASE DOCUMENT and quote when necessary. Even opinion answers will often need back-up documentation in order to be a quality response. Work cited pages are almost always necessary!

If there is an assignment within the weekly module that DOES NOT have a due date on it, it is STILL DUE AT THE END OF THAT WEEK along with all of the other assignments.

Grading scale: 90-100=A 80-89=B 70-79=C 60-69=D 59-0=F

Plagiarism is defined in section 16.2 of the Code of Conduct: “Representing the words or ideas of another as one’s own. Plagiarism includes claiming credit for assignments completed by someone else.” All instances of intentional plagiarism on any major assignment for this course will lead to the immediate failure of the course with no opportunity for the student to withdraw. The instance of plagiarism will be reported to the Dean of Student Development. If the student has a second instance of plagiarism reported to the Dean of Student Development, the student may be suspended from the institution.

Plagiarism includes using AI to write for you. Chat GPT and similar AI tools are not allowed to be accessed in this class. Using this may result in course failure.

Tests: Every week you will complete a test. You will take your tests ONLINE, in a TIMED format. You will not have enough time to look up every question, so prepare as if it is not open book. Tests must be completed by midnight, Monday.

Late work: You may turn in late work with a 10% daily reduction in grade, up to one week only.

Numerical Interpretation: All test scores, writing assignments, and extra credit points are totaled toward a final grade point average. Avoid penalties for late work by turning in assignments on time.
